12 Weeks, 12 Commissions!

A series of short projects for various ensembles, the commissions for Project 12 have all been finalized! Read more about the upcoming pieces below.

Wow!

Since returning to Portland post-smokepocalypse, launching this new website, working on movements for two new pieces, announcing the start of Project 12, and wrapping up the last of the works from Commissions from Quarantine, it’s been such an inspiring whirlwind of activity!

Before everything exploded into activity, I had been struggling with how to move forward in music during COVID, as so many of the plans I had for 2020 (like everyone else!) were completely changed. It is truly amazing how much things can change over the course of a few weeks, and I am both excited and relieved to have my days filled with music-making again (much to my partner’s relief, I haven’t neurotically re-arranged the furniture in days)! Doing these smaller projects has been a great way to stay connected with composing in a way that doesn’t overwhelm me or overextend musicians who are struggling financially but want to collaborate, and keeps me grounded in the kind of work I love doing. I am so grateful to everyone who has participated, shared these opportunities with others, and supported me throughout these projects! It has really make 2020 bearable, and at times, truly fulfilling.

Thanks to everyone’s support, Project 12 filled up in just a few days, and I am so excited to share a few more details about the projects I will be writing for in the coming weeks!

The Projects:

Week 1 - Guitar and beginner piano (a birthday present from a grandfather to his granddaughter!)

Week 2 - Viola, Cello, Double Bass, and Percussion (about the beauty of the Grand Circle region, located in the American Southwest)

Week 3 - Solo Piano

Week 4 - Soprano, Alto Saxophone, and Cello

Week 5 - Soprano and Guitar (for a critical recital on the works of John Dowland)

Week 6 - Found Percussion (a theatrical work)

Week 7 - Cello Quartet

Week 8 - Solo Flute with Singing (about Rockhopper Penguins)

Week 9 - 2 Euphoniums, Bass Tuba, Marimba, and Electronics (about natural disasters)

Week 10 - Trumpet and Marimba Duo

Week 11 - Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Viola, and Harp

Week 12 - Voice, Oboe, Saxophone (doubling Flute!), Bassoon, and Piano

With such an eclectic array of instruments and topics, I’m very excited to get started! Some ensembles may choose to remain anonymous for now, but I’ll be sure to share any video or audio recordings that are released to me as the project continues.

Have a safe and healthy September, everyone!
