Spring Forward was a commissioning series meant to provide music to a wide range of ensembles for a greatly reduced fee. I wrote a blog post for the works, including score excerpts, linked in the Project Calendar below. The sheet music for works from this series will be for sale in Spring of 2022, after the exclusivity period for these works is over. To see works currently available for purchase, please visit my Library.

Project Updates:

  • May 15th: Spring Forward is now complete! You can read below to see some highlights from the project and check out blog posts about the works! Thank you so much to everyone who commissioned, read, shared, and listened. I’m so excited to share more about these works in the coming months as performances pick back up in the next season.

  • April 15th: Just one project left!! What an exciting few months it has been. This last month I got to work with a high school double reed trio and a guitar and sax duo who are based on different coasts! Being able to focus on these more involved chamber pieces has really made the last few weeks a great opportunity to explore these instruments more in-depth. The last project is a month-long project for string quartet and a wind soloist, and I can’t wait to dig in!

  • March 8th: Spring Forward is half-way complete! From writing short service music, to working on a piece for middle school orchestra, and just recently wrapping up an art song for baritone and voice, Spring Forward has already proven to be a dynamic and exciting writing experience. I am so excited to start on the second half of projects!

  • February 1st: Spring Forward has now begun! I’m so excited to start working on this exciting array of compositions, commissioned by musicians and institutions from all over the US! Check back soon for more updates.

  • January 30th: April has now been filled. There are no more remaining commission spots.

  • January 27th: March has now been filled. There are still commission spots available in April!

  • January 25th: February has now been filled. There are still commission spots available in March and April!

Call for Proposals:

Applications for this project are now closed, but you can still read the initial call for proposals below:

With the recent successes of my sprint-commissioning series (Commissions from Quarantine and Project 12), I am so excited to announce my Spring 2021 call for proposals—Spring Forward!

Between February and May, I am offering special rates on commissions. Each piece will be inspired by a topic, mood, or idea chosen by the commissioners. The project has been organized into three project tracks: Sprints (written within 1 week), Treks (written within 2 weeks), and Quests (written within 4 weeks). Each week I will write a blog post that includes details about the commissioners and the works—as well as score and audio excerpts from the pieces I’m working on!

How to Apply:

Applications are reviewed on a “first-come, first-served” basis. Accepted applicants will be scheduled on a rolling basis.

Applicants should submit a brief proposal via e-mail (kimpositions@gmail.com) or the contact page that includes:

  • The applicant's full name

  • The name of the ensemble (if applicable)

  • Any websites or social media links (if applicable—I often use these in blog posts for my readers to learn more about you!)

  • The proposed instrumentation and duration

  • A brief description of a topic, mood, or inspiration you’d like the piece to be based on

  • Any special considerations you’d like to include (difficulty level, if the work is intended for a child audience, sonic sensitivity considerations, etc.)

Any instrumentation is welcome. Electronics may be included in your instrumentation if you are commissioning in the Trek or Quest categories.

For applicants interested in incorporating text, the text must either be in public domain or the applicant will need to provide proof-of-permission from the author or estate. I can also write an original text for an additional fee.
