Kindred Spirits was written for trumpet player, Will Koehler. The work was inspired by our mutual passion, mythological creatures. While many pieces exist for Greek and Roman creations, I wanted to write a work which focused on creatures which had parallels across the globe. The Ahuixotl (hailing from Aztec legends, with parallels in Russia and Ireland) is a demonic water creature, similar to a dog; it resides in fresh water sources, such as lakes, and has a claw-like tail that snatches unsuspecting swimmers from the surface. The Moon Rabbit is by far the most prominent throughout the world—cultures throughout time and throughout the globe have seemed to notice a rabbit on the face of the moon, though they have different explanations for how it came to be there. I was particularly inspired by the Cree version, in which a rabbit wishes to go the moon and rides the back of a crane; the crane stretches its legs, and the rabbit digs its paws into the crane’s head to hold on. The rabbit has, by all accounts, remained there to this day. The last movement, inspired by the Thunderbird, is most commonly known the US as hailing from North American tribes (particularly Algonquian tribes), though parallels exist in South African and Māori traditions as well. The Thunderbird is thought to have been of unimaginable size, serving both as a protector of the innocent and the judge, jury, and executioner of the wicked.

Inspired by a summer road trip along the 101 Coastal Highway, Road Trip 101 is a tour-de-force in ensemble playing, often challenging players to pick up lines and blur textures seamlessly across voices. In Morning, the initial fog quickly lifts as the piano continuously motors along in vibrantly incessant pulses as the other voices sound car horn unisons, swerving lines, thick tremolo interruptions, and large leaps. The fog returns at the end of the movement, signaling the start of a hot, buzzy afternoon. Afternoon attempts to capture both the usual sleepy feeling a hot summer sun can bring, as well as fits of energy as one tries to rouse themselves. Noble efforts to awake often slink back to a slumber. The movement slows to a quiet finish, ever dimming. In Evening, we hear both the sparkling shimmer of stars as well as the rich darkness of night. This lush movement basks in the adventures of the day before drifting away into the night.

Commissioned by Matthew Driscoll, Every Day, Everywhere is dedicated to Josh Bynum, in memory of Josh’s grandmother and her loving spirit. The piece uses this unusual ensemble to create a warm, sweet soundscape, giving each instrumental voice a moment to shine. Sweet, lullaby-like melodies contrast with lilting bursts of energy, making this short work an ideal addition to any recital or public performance.

Commissioned by a father to perform with his high school son, this work attempts to mix elements from both LOTR and POTC themes while still creating a profile all its own. Using a dancing mixed meter, folk-like melodies, bold rhythmic emphasis, and coloristic glissandi/runs, this short piece packs a punch!

Our Little Secrets was originally commissioned by the NEXT Commissioning Consortium, which aimed to provide flexible instrumentation works at various difficulty levels. The wind octet proved immensely popular among wind ensembles and graduate conducting students, so it was a pleasure to bring this piece to a completely new instrument group. In this arrangement made specially for brass ensemble, the shifts in color are made all the more subtle by the more homogenous relationship between instruments—making for lightning fast counterpoint, wonderful antiphonal effects, wild rips and fast trills, and thunderously powerful arrivals in the low voices.
