Piano
Note from the Composer: Greetings pianists! While the piano is certainly never hurting for repertoire, I love leaning on my percussion and harp background to bring new life to the kinds of works I create for this historic instrument. While I’ve written for the piano on and off over the years, I would love to explore more solo writing for the instrument in the near future. If you don’t find something here to your liking, reach out—I’d love to chat about a new project with you. In the meantime, I’m always happy to recommend works by other living composers if you’re on the hunt for something a little different than what you find here!

peace by piece for solo piano (2021)
Duration: variable
Commissioner: Chris Opperman (Website)
peace by piece was commissioned by pianist Chris Opperman in 2021 for his 2023 album, Still Waters. As an album, Still Waters seeks to create a kind of winter dreamland—a beautiful, tranquil place to provide a safe harbor for troubled minds and weary souls. Music has often provided that safe harbor for me, and I am in constant awe of how a piece of music can bring me peace of mind. Wanting to provide that for others and using the album art as inspiration, I created my own dreamland to wander in, explore about, and recover. However you encounter this piece—whether you end up hearing the trees chatter or stones whistle across the ice, track footprints or sip in the warmth, fill the silence with gentle hums or whistles, or even just bask in stillness—I offer this “choose-your-own-adventure” work for both listener and performer, in the hopes you can get lost together in this gentle, wintry land.

Mercurial Aims for solo piano (2020)
Duration: 5’00”
Commissioner: Carol Anne Smock (Website)
Mercurial Aims was commissioned by Carol Anne Smock as part of the Project 12 commissioning series. With both dark and twinkling sections, this work is meant as a contemplation on space—the seemingly-stagnant, cold nature of which is revealed to be ever-changing and deeply vibrant. Oscillating between delicate, fragile melodies; powerful, lush chords; and sharp, incisive rhythms, the piece explores a wide array of textures seeping in and out of one another.

A Memory of Nature for solo piano (2020)
Duration: 5’45”

Commissioned by Chris Opperman as part of a series of recording projects to capture calm, still, and tranquil pieces, A Memory of Nature was inspired by an evening spent in the Yellowood State Forest, located in Indiana. Sometimes overwhelmed by the awesome, towering trees or quietly awestruck by delicate movements of birds, other times basking in the stillness of stars or joyfully rolling downhill, this homage provides ample opportunity for the intermediate pianist to showcase a variety of styles, textures, and expressive capabilities for the instrument.

Mutes used: harmon mute (stem in)
Commissioned by Nicolle Gillotti to pay tribute to two of her great loves - beer and skiing - Hops lives up to its name. Kindred Spirits for trumpet in C + piano or wind ensemble (2019, rev. 2022)
This work is in three movements:
1. Ahuixotl (3’00”)
2. Moon Rabbit (5’00”)
3. Thunderbird (4’30”)
Duration: 12'30"
Commissioner: Andrew Chybowski, Pittsburg State University Wind Ensemble (wind ensemble version), and Will Koehler (piano version)
Mutes used: straight mute (Movement 1 only), harmon mute (stem in, Movement 2 only)
Kindred Spirits was written for trumpet player, Will Koehler. The work was inspired by our mutual passion, mythological creatures. While many pieces exist for Greek and Roman creations, I wanted to write a work which focused on creatures which had parallels across the globe.
The Ahuixotl (hailing from Aztec legends, with parallels in Russia and Ireland) is a demonic water creature, similar to a dog; it resides in fresh water sources, such as lakes, and has a claw-like tail that snatches unsuspecting swimmers from the surface.
The Moon Rabbit is by far the most prominent throughout the world—cultures throughout time and throughout the globe have seemed to notice a rabbit on the face of the moon, though they have different explanations for how it came to be there. I was particularly inspired by the Cree version, in which a rabbit wishes to go the moon and rides the back of a crane; the crane stretches its legs, and the rabbit digs its paws into the crane’s head to hold on. The rabbit has, by all accounts, remained there to this day.
The last movement, inspired by the Thunderbird, is most commonly known the US as hailing from North American tribes (particularly Algonquian tribes), though parallels exist in South African and Māori traditions as well. The Thunderbird is thought to have been of unimaginable size, serving both as a protector of the innocent and the judge, jury, and executioner of the wicked.

Commissioner: Audrey Alessi (Website)
Originally commissioned as part of an evening of works for viola by female American composers, Dirty Jeans is a rambunctious and vibrant work. Commissions from Quarantine: 14. Romantic, Contemporary, Dark for vibraphone and piano (2020)
Duration: 3’30”
Commissioner: Jade Hails (YouTube) and Letizia Pent (YouTube)
This short work for vibraphone and piano was inspired in part by the novel Giants in the Earth and the film Days of Heaven, which both feature a giant, destructive swarm of locusts. The piano starts with a menacing march as the vibraphone swells and decays. The piano and vibraphone dialogue back and forth, building exponentially until a tutti outburst creeps, crawls, and zooms downward. This interplay continues throughout the work with only momentary reprieves—resulting in a dynamic, truly balanced duo sure to leave a chill down the spine of your listener!
Trios and Quartets with Piano
Road Trip 101 for alto saxophone (dbl soprano), trumpet (dbl flugel), and piano (2023)
From the premiere at the University of Arkansas SHE Festival (Mvts 1 and 2). Performance starts at 1:32:05
This work is in three movements:
1. Morning (4’45”)
2. Afternoon (3’30”)
3. Evening (4’00”)
Duration: 12’15”
Commissioner: Sarah Hetrick, Nicole Gillotti, and Tatiana Gorbunova
Mutes used: None
Inspired by a summer road trip along the 101 Coastal Highway, Road Trip 101 is a tour-de-force in ensemble playing, often challenging players to pick up lines and blur textures seamlessly across voices. In Morning, the initial fog quickly lifts as the piano continuously motors along in vibrantly incessant pulses as the other voices sound car horn unisons, swerving lines, thick tremolo interruptions, and large leaps. The fog returns at the end of the movement, signaling the start of a hot, buzzy afternoon. Afternoon attempts to capture both the usual sleepy feeling a hot summer sun can bring, as well as fits of energy as one tries to rouse themselves. Noble efforts to awake often slink back to a slumber. The movement slows to a quiet finish, ever dimming. In Evening, we hear both the sparkling shimmer of stars as well as the rich darkness of night. This lush movement basks in the adventures of the day before drifting away into the night.

Interplay for clarinet in Bb, violin, and piano (2018)
This work can also be viewed as a 360 video (SamsungVR) with a performance by the Bruce Wood Dance company on my YouTube Channel!
Duration: 6’30”
Commissioner: Trio Kavanáh (now MAKEnsemble)
Commissioned by Trio Kavanáh and the Dallas Contemporary to accompany the showcase, Interplay is inspired by the Horizons exhibit by artist, Ian Davenport. The work opens with a vivid mimicry of paint falling on canvas, but soon explodes into a frenzy of dovetailing counterpoint and strong, tutti arrivals—highlighting each member of the ensemble. A slow, aleatoric middle section enchants the listener before a final explosion of energy, culminating in dramatic ensemble runs.

Chamber Ensemble Works with Piano
Broken Boomerang for flute, clarinet, viola, cello, and piano (2014)
Duration: 5’30”
While I was getting coffee one summer, I saw some local kids throwing various discs, boomerangs, and other flight toys around a field. At one point, a cheap boomerang they had been playing around with snapped off at one end; the kids started flicking it around, trying to get it to return to them with varying degrees of failure. I started thinking about how to depict this struggle musically, and the result was this work. A large variety of textures flit and scurry as the main idea struggles to return, resulting in rhythmic-but-fragmented interruptions, lyrical-but-melancholic melodies, and a final outburst that leaves the listener with only cinders.

Mountain Dances for oboe, bassoon, violin, viola, and piano (2013, rev. 2021)
This work is in three movements:
1. Thin Aire (5’30”)
2. Bearceuse (3’45”)
3. Sun(ata) Burnt (4’15”)
Duration: 13’30”
Mountain Dances was written in the summer of 2013 in Estes Park, Colorado. Inspired by the lush forests, towering peaks, brilliant sunshine, and even the occasional bear spotting, the suite encompasses a wide variety of moods, colors, and textures. In Thin Aire, the bouncing rhythms and intricate voicings work to create a perpetually swirling soundscape that is simultaneously light and lush. In Bearceuse, both bear and lullaby appear in the piano's extreme registration and the reeds' lyrical and singing melodies. Sun(ata) Burnt sizzles, burbles, and shimmers in colorful sustains, playful mixed meter grooves, and sweeping melodies that weave between the instruments. The result is a showcase piece for the entire ensemble—roaming, tumbling, and dancing their way through the wilderness.
